This book is about two young women called Harriet and Maud. They met in a workhouse and after hearing another women tell a story about a seance she's been to they decided to start conning people. They tell people that they are mother and daughter as it says in the book 'it made them feel at ease'. The story begins with Harriet and Maud at a seance Maud was holding in Manchester. Harriet notices a large dolls house and an odd door in a symmetrical hallway, and whilst Maud is holding the seance Harriet is searching for valuable trinkets. She meets a strange little girl called Olivia and Maud has a spooky experience when she is holding the seance. Afterwards Harriet finds out from the owner of the house that Olivia was her twin sister who died when they were very little and when Harriet returns inside to take a piece of silver cutlery will she return?
My favourite characters in the book are Maud and Harriet because as you are reading the book it is interesting to find out about the sort of relationship Maud and Harriet have and the friction that occurs between them .They are also my favourite characters because their story is quite intriguing especially when you find out  how they decided to start conning people and how they met in a workhouse.
I liked this story because the characters were really interesting and the story was quite sad when I found out about Olivia; it was also chilling finding out about how Olivia died.
I would recommend this book more to people more my age because it is quite scary and addictive. It is a brilliant read for both girls and boys as it is not too girly and pretty and it is also not to boyish and violent.
